Diabetes Action Provides Camp Scholarships

In addition to funding diabetes research and prevention programs, Diabetes Action offers scholarships to 55 summer camps for children with diabetes who need financial assistance. Combining the fun of swimming, horseback riding, tennis, and other enriching activities with nutritional and lifestyle education in a nurturing environment helps children learn to live with diabetes. For many children, camp is the only time in their lives when everyone truly understands them and their daily struggles with diabetes.

The following is a heartwarming letter of thanks from Tamara Smith, Director of Operations at Camp Conrad Chinnock:

This year two families and two children from the San Diego area were awarded camperships from the funds provided. Both of the families were single parent and had two out of four children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. All eight children were under the age of ten. Both mothers revealed that they had previously been in abusive marriages and camp was a place they wanted their children to feel safe at. They wanted the diabetic children to make friends, learn about diabetes and experience happiness. Camp succeeded in reaching each of these goals. I believe that through the generosity of Diabetes Action, [we] have been able to make a positive influence in the future of these kids and their families. One girl and one boy came to camp on the remaining funds. Neither child would have been able to attend camp without financial aid.

Diabetes Action has been generous to Camp Conrad Chinook through the years. Many families in need have been able to send their children to camp with funds provided by your efforts. Thank you so much for your kindness and caring.
