Marathon runner Alyssa Johnson of Santa Cruz, California, was just 40 years old when she was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease in 2005. Her Parkinson's impairs the right side of her body, which refuses to work the way she wants it to. She runs dragging her right leg, unable to swing her right arm. Though she often struggles through runs, and sometimes there is more walking than running, she perseveres, determined to reach the finish line and raise awareness and funds for a cure for Parkinson's disease. As a member of Team Fox, The Michael J. Fox Foundation's community fundraising program, Alyssa has raised over $80,000 for Parkinson's research. She continues to fundraise for the Foundation and in November, Alyssa will continue her efforts, running The ING New York City Marathon for Team Fox. Alyssa's story is unique in that she is fighting a serious disease, but she is no different than any other runner: facing challenges and pushing forward to achieve a goal. Her story is one of courage, persistence and hope. She is a true athlete and an inspiration to any runner.
